Body repair or collision repair?

People use the two interchangeably, and they overlap, but there is a useful line between them.

Collision repair is what happens after an impact. There is usually a claim, an adjuster, and a supplement, and the damage often runs deeper than the panel you can see. That work has its own page. Storm damage across several panels is hail damage repair, and the mechanical side of an impact is automotive repair.

Body work is the craft underneath it, and much of it arrives with no accident at all. A parking garage pillar. A shopping cart. Ten years of Texas sun on a hood. A door that has been sagging since somebody leaned on it. None of that involves a claim, and most of it gets paid directly because the repair costs less than a deductible.

If you are not sure which one you have, bring it by, and we will tell you.

What auto body repair covers.

  • Dented doors, fenders, quarter panels, hoods, and tailgates where the paint has broken, and dent work is no longer an option
  • Body panel replacement where the damage is beyond repair, fitted and aligned so the gaps sit right
  • Bumper repair and bumper replacement, including covers, absorbers, brackets and the sensors mounted in them
  • Rust repair, cut back to clean metal, treated and sealed before anything is refinished
  • Trim, moldings, handles, mirrors and lamps removed and refitted properly rather than masked around
  • Cosmetic body work before a sale, a trade-in, or a lease return
  • Aluminum panel work, which behaves nothing like steel and gets its own tools and its own bay

Where the paint over a dent is unbroken, we will send you to paintless dent repair instead. It costs less, it is faster, and it leaves the factory finish on the vehicle. That is the smaller job for us, and it is usually the right one.

What we repair, panel by panel.

Auto body repair is easier to picture by the panel, and people search for the part rather than the service, so here is what comes through the door at our Plano shop.

  • Hoods, roof panels, trunk lids, liftgates, and tailgates. The horizontal panels take sun damage and impact damage in roughly equal measure.
  • Doors, door edges, and fenders. Door edge chips are the most common damage on any vehicle and the cheapest thing on this list to put right.
  • Quarter panels and rocker panels, including the rust that collects along the bottom edge.
  • Truck bed sides and van panels on work vehicles.
  • Bumper covers, grilles, headlight and taillight housings, mirror caps and fuel doors. These are the parts most often damaged and most often assumed to be unrepairable.
  • Running boards and trim, which usually come off to reach something else anyway.

We repair SUVs, trucks, sedans, and vans, domestic and import, and we take fleet and commercial vehicle body work.

Repair before replace.

This is the decision that moves an auto body repair estimate more than anything else, and it is where shops differ most.

A steel panel that has been dented but not torn can usually be worked back with hammer and dolly work, a stud welder where there is no access from behind, metal finishing, and a skim of filler rather than a slab of it. It takes time and skill, and it costs considerably less than a new panel fitted, primed, painted, and blended. A panel that is creased through a body line, stretched badly, or rusted through cannot be repaired, and pretending otherwise produces a repair that shows.

Getting that call right sometimes needs a teardown, where the panels come off, and the damage gets blueprinted before a final number is written. Our default is to repair. We replace when replacing is genuinely the right answer, and we tell you which one yours is at the estimate rather than after the vehicle is apart. If a carrier's estimate calls for replacement where repair would do, or the reverse, we document the difference.

OEM, aftermarket and used parts.

This is the argument nobody explains to you, and on an auto body repair it decides both the price and how the panel fits.

OEM parts are made by or for the manufacturer to original equipment specifications. They fit the way the panel that came off did, and the paint takes to them predictably.

Aftermarket parts are made by a third party to copy an OEM part. Quality ranges from good to poor. A bad one fights you on the gap, needs extra prep before paint, and can sit a millimeter proud where the eye catches it.

Used and recycled parts come off donor vehicles. On an older vehicle, a good used panel is often the sensible answer, particularly when the color already matches.

Carriers frequently specify aftermarket or used parts to control cost, and a shop on that carrier's program has agreed in advance to accept them. Extreme Hail & Collision has no such agreement. We tell you which parts an estimate calls for, what that means for fit and finish, and where we think the carrier is wrong. You decide, and if you want genuine parts where the carrier specified otherwise, we document the case.

Rust repair.

Rust is never as small as it looks. What shows on the surface is the part that has already come through the paint, and the metal around it has usually been going for a while.

Doing it properly means cutting the corroded metal out, welding in fresh panel where the section has gone through, treating what remains, sealing it, and only then refinishing. Grinding the surface and covering it brings the rust back through the new paint inside a year or two, which is why the cheap version of this repair is not cheaper.

Corrosion turns up in the same places on most Plano vehicles: wheel arches, rocker panels, the lower edges of doors and tailgates, and anywhere a stone chip sat unrepaired through a couple of wet winters.

Faded paint, oxidation, and clear coat failure.

Texas sun does more damage to Plano vehicles than every parking lot in Collin County combined, and putting it right is auto body repair rather than accident work.

Oxidation is what you see when a red hood turns chalky pink or a black roof goes grey. The clear coat has broken down, and the color underneath is exposed. Once it starts, it spreads because the layer that was protecting the pigment is gone.

Clear coat failure is the next stage, where the finish peels away in sheets rather than fading evenly. Roofs and hoods go first because they face straight up. A paint chip left unrepaired does the same thing in miniature, letting moisture sit against bare metal until corrosion starts.

None of it polishes out once the clear coat has gone. The body repair is stripping the panel back before it is refinished, and the refinishing itself is priced on our auto paint shop page.

Scratches, scuffs, and curb rash.

The small stuff is still auto body repair, and it is what most people actually walk in with.

A scratch that catches a fingernail has gone through the clear coat and needs filling and refinishing. One that does not can often be polished out. Key scratches and vandalism damage usually run across more than one panel, which changes the job considerably.

Curb rash from a Plano parking garage, scuffs down a rocker panel, and the grey transfer left behind when another vehicle brushes past are all repairable, and most of them cost less than a deductible. Car body repair at this end is quick, and we would rather tell you a scratch will polish out than sell you a refinish.

Bring it by. Scratch and dent removal is one of the jobs where a two-minute look tells us more than any photograph.

Bumper repair and replacement.

Bumper covers take more damage than any other panel, and they are the ones people most often assume need replacing.

Plastic covers can frequently be repaired. Scuffs, small cracks, and tabs broken at the mounting points are all repairable through plastic welding and adhesive bonding, with the surface texture rebuilt to match, and a repaired cover costs a fraction of a new one supplied, painted, and fitted. What decides it is where the damage sits and whether the mounting structure behind the cover survived.

What sits behind the cover matters as much as the cover. The reinforcement bar, the absorber, and the brackets all take load in an impact, and a cover that looks repairable can be hiding a bent bar. Parking sensors and rear radar units mount in the bumper too, so anything that disturbs them needs checking afterward.

Custom body shop work and older vehicles.

Not everything that comes in is a late-model daily driver, and custom body shop work is a different job from a standard repair.

We work on every make and model, domestic and import, and older vehicles need panels that are harder to source, with metal that has usually had a previous repair or two. Custom body shop work means one-off panel fabrication, classic car restoration panels, finish work, and the patience to make something fit that was never quite right to begin with. It is slower, and it is quoted individually.

If you are looking for a custom body shop rather than a straightforward repair, bring the project by, and we will tell you honestly whether it is something we should take on.

Written to pre-loss condition.

Pre-loss condition means the vehicle comes back the way it was before the damage, in appearance, in panel fit, and in the way it drives.

It matters because an estimate can be written to a number instead of a standard. A panel gets filled where it should have been replaced. A blend gets skipped so the paint stops at a hard edge. Rust gets covered rather than cut out. The vehicle leaves looking fine under shop lights and wrong in daylight three weeks later. When a carrier's estimate falls short of pre-loss condition, Extreme Hail & Collision documents the gap and takes it back to them.

We work for you, not your insurance company.

Extreme Hail & Collision is not a direct repair program member. A DRP shop is on an insurer's list because it agreed to that carrier's pricing and cycle times. We never signed one.

On body work, that cuts two ways. When a claim is involved, we write what the vehicle needs and defend it with the adjuster. And when a claim is not involved, which covers most body repair, nobody here has any reason to talk you into filing one. Plenty of body work costs less than a deductible, so paying out of pocket often works out cheaper than filing, and we say so when it does.

In Texas, you choose who repairs your vehicle regardless of what you are told on the phone.

Everything happens in this building.

A large share of body shops in Plano subcontract. Paint goes one place, dent work to a traveling technician, other work somewhere else. The vehicle spends days being driven between businesses, and nobody owns the result.

We do our own body work, our own preparation, our own paint, and our own paintless dent repair, all under this roof on Ohio Drive. Auto glass and sensor calibration are the two things we send out, both to a specialist, and we book and coordinate them.

The difference shows when something is not right. A gap sitting a hair wide, a color reading slightly cool in the sun, and the person who did the work is thirty feet away.

What moves the price.

Auto body repair has a wide range, and these are the variables that decide where a job lands.

  • Repair or replace on each panel, which is the single biggest factor
  • How many panels are involved, and whether the paint has to blend into the ones next door. Refinishing is priced separately and covered on our auto paint shop page
  • What has to come off to reach the damage. Trim, glass, handles, and liners all add hours
  • Rust, which is always larger than it looks once the paint comes off
  • Material. Aluminum needs its own tools and its own preparation
  • Part availability, which usually decides the timeline rather than the labor

Send photos if you want a rough idea before driving over. A real free estimate is written after we see the panel in person, because a photograph flattens a dent and hides a crease, and a number given over the phone is a guess dressed up as a quote.

How long body work takes.

A single dented panel with paint is usually two to four days, which covers repair, refinishing, and proper cure time. Multi-panel work runs longer. Rust repair takes longer than people expect, because cutting and treating cannot be rushed. A panel replacement waiting on a back-ordered part takes as long as the part takes, and we tell you that when we order rather than letting the promised date quietly slip.

We keep you updated while the vehicle is here. Being left wondering is the most common complaint people have about body shops, and it is an easy one to avoid.

Across North Texas.

Bodywork is the one service people shop around for, because there is usually no claim and no adjuster telling them where to go. That means an estimate in Plano has to be worth the drive.

Plano is home ground, and most of our body repair starts here, from the neighborhoods off Preston and Legacy through to west Plano and the 75093 side. Richardson and Carrollton come across for a second opinion after a dealership quote called for panel replacement, both an easy run down the George Bush. Frisco and Allen sit close enough that parking damage and trade-in tidy-ups are worth the trip rather than the local dealer. McKinney tends to arrive with the bigger jobs, rust and multi-panel work, where the difference between two quotes covers the drive several times over. Beyond Collin County, we take work from Dallas, Garland, Wylie, Prosper, Celina, and The Colony.

Our shop is at 1101 Ohio Dr #111 in West Plano, 75093, just off the George Bush Turnpike and Preston Road, with parking at the door.

Free pickup and delivery cover the whole area, though for body work most people prefer to come into the Plano shop and look at the panel with us.

Auto body repair questions.

What is the difference between body repair and collision repair?

Collision repair follows an impact and usually involves a claim and an adjuster. Body work is the underlying craft, and much of it arrives with no accident at all: parking dents, door creases, rust, faded panels. Most body work at Extreme Hail & Collision costs less than a deductible and is paid directly, and the impact side is covered on our collision repair page.

How much does auto body work cost in Plano?

It depends on whether a panel is repaired or replaced, how many panels need paint and blending, and what has to come off to reach the damage. Rust adds time because it is always larger than it looks. Estimates at our Plano shop are free and written.

How long does auto body repair take?

A single dented panel with paint is usually two to four days at Extreme Hail & Collision, allowing for cure time. Multi-panel work and rust repair take longer. A replacement waiting on a back-ordered part takes as long as the part does, and we tell you at the point of ordering.

Can you repair rust?

Yes. Rust is cut back to clean metal, welded where the section has gone through, then treated and sealed before anything is refinished. Covering it without removing it brings it back through the new paint within a year or two, so we would rather do it once.

Why is my paint fading or peeling?

Texas sun breaks the clear coat down on Plano vehicles, which is why roofs and hoods go first. Once the clear coat has gone, the color underneath oxidizes, and the finish starts peeling in sheets. It will not polish out at that stage. The panel needs stripping back and refinishing.

Can a bumper be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. Scuffs, small cracks, and broken mounting tabs on a plastic cover are repairable through plastic welding and adhesive bonding, and a repaired cover costs a fraction of a new one supplied and painted. What decides it is where the damage sits and whether the reinforcement bar behind it survived.

Will my insurance company pay for OEM parts?

Sometimes, and it depends on your policy and the vehicle's age. Carriers often specify aftermarket or used parts to control cost. Extreme Hail & Collision is not on any insurer's program, so we tell you what an estimate calls for, what it means for fit and finish, and document the case when genuine parts are the right answer.

Can you fix a scratch without repainting the panel?

If the scratch does not catch a fingernail, it has stayed in the clear coat and can often be polished out. Once it is through to the primer or the metal, it needs filling and refinishing. We will tell you which one you have rather than selling you the bigger job.

Do I need to file an insurance claim for body work?

Frequently, no. A single panel repair in Plano often costs less than a standard deductible, so paying out of pocket works out the same or cheaper and keeps the claim off your record. We give you the number first so you can decide.

Do you do custom body work?

Yes. As a custom body shop in Plano, we take on one-off panel fabrication and finish work on older vehicles. That work is slower than a standard repair and is quoted individually, so bring the vehicle by and tell us what you have in mind.

Which areas do you serve for body work?

Extreme Hail & Collision is in Plano first, then Richardson, Carrollton, Frisco, Allen, and McKinney, with the rest of Collin County and the wider metroplex reaching us too. Free pickup and delivery cover the whole area if the drive does not fit your day.

Do you repair aluminum panels?

Yes. Aluminum moves differently from steel, work-hardens faster, and needs separate tools and a separate bay to avoid cross-contamination. Extreme Hail & Collision handles aluminum panel work in-house.
