What kinds of dents we pull.

Dent repair covers more ground than most people expect, so here is what actually comes through the door in Plano.

• Door dings from parking lots, garages, and drive-throughs, usually a single shallow dent at handle height.
• Shopping cart dents on quarter panels and doors, often several small ones in a line.
• Hail dents across the roof, hood, and deck lid, shallow and numerous.
• Body line creases from a post, a bollard, or another vehicle's corner.
• Roof dents from a branch, a ball, or something dropped, which need the headliner lowered for access.
• Hood and fender dents from debris on the tollway.
• Tailgate and bed side dents on trucks, where access from behind is usually straightforward.
• Aluminum panel dents, which hold their shape differently than steel and need a slower hand.

Dent removal on any of these starts the same way, with a look at whether the paint is intact.

When PDR is not the answer.

This is the part most shops leave off their website. PDR is not right for every dent, and pretending otherwise costs you money.

• Broken or cracked paint. Pulling the dent does not fix the paint, and bare metal rusts. The panel needs conventional repair and refinishing.
• Dents on a panel edge or body line seam where there is no access from behind and the metal is doubled over.
• Severely stretched metal from a sharp impact, where the panel will never fully return to shape.
• Panels with prior filler. Filler does not move the way metal does, so working it from behind does nothing useful.

When one of these is the case, we say so and quote the conventional repair instead, which happens in the same building. That work is auto body repair, with color-matched refinishing at our auto paint shop.

What paintless dent repair costs.

Nobody publishes this number because it moves with the dent, so here is what actually drives it.

• Size. A dime is quick. A half dollar takes longer. The bigger the dent, the more passes it takes to bring the metal back without over-pushing it.
• Depth and sharpness. A shallow round dent is straightforward. A sharp dent with a crown around it has stretched the metal and takes considerably more work.
• Location. A dent in the middle of a door skin is easy to access. A dent behind a brace, on a body line, or at a panel edge means more disassembly and a slower hand.
• Access. Some panels need trim, a liner, or a window channel removed to reach the back of the dent. That time goes on the quote.
• Count. One ding is one price. Storm damage is priced by panel and dent count from the same matrix your insurer uses.

A single door ding is usually the least expensive repair a body shop does, and it is almost always cheaper than the same panel refinished. Dent repair quotes at Extreme Hail & Collision are free, and most take about fifteen minutes.

Leased vehicles and trade-ins.

This is where paintless dent repair earns its keep beyond the money.

A leased vehicle heading for turn-in gets inspected, and refinished panels get noticed. So does the vehicle history report a dealer pulls at trade-in. PDR leaves neither, because nothing was repainted and no paint work exists to report.

If you are handing a vehicle back this year, or selling it, pulling the dings rather than refinishing the panels protects what the vehicle is worth. It is also the cheaper of the two, which does not usually happen.

Written to pre-loss condition.

Pre-loss condition means the panel comes back the way it was before the damage, not close enough to pass at a glance. On dent work, that standard is easy to check, because a reflection board does not flatter anybody.

It matters most on the borderline repairs. A crease that comes out ninety percent looks fine head-on and shows itself the moment light runs down the panel. We would rather tell you at the quote that a crease needs a skim and a blend than pull it most of the way and hand it back. On dent work, that matters in two ways. When a claim is involved, a carrier's estimate can count panels short or price a dent band one tier low, and we document the gap and go back to them on your behalf. And when a claim is not involved, which covers most door dings, nobody here has any reason to talk you into filing one.
